About “FOUNDATIONS”

The year is 2265 and seven years have passed since the name Vulcan passed from a desert world to a black hole absorbing all that choose to venture too close.

To say this changes things would be something of an understatement as so many lives … Federation lives … have been lost, forever changing the flow of time’s river.

A division of Star Trek: Frontiers, Foundations offers our writers a chance to determine what changes would take place as a result of altered history as well as how that history will unfold.

Following the events outlined in the movie Star Trek XI, galactic politics grew more strained.

Intelligence operatives from the Romulan Empire operating undercover in Federation space reported back what they could with regards to events surrounding the destruction of the planet Vulcan as well as the follow-up attack on Earth.

From all the information gleaned, one thing stood out above all others for those of the Empire — one of their own had ventured backwards in time to avenge the future destruction of the Romulan homeworld.

By laying the blame of such a treacherous act on the shoulders of the Vulcans and the United Federation of Planets, Capt. Nero of the future ship Narada set the Romulan Empire on something of a new path.

In his wake, he left an empire more distrustful and more apt to bring about the downfall of its enemy.

Through covert means, the Romulans successfully sown new seeds of distrust within the Klingon Empire — an act that led to a faction within the Klingon Empire to rise up in an attempt to seize control from the Chancellor and the High Council.

Thus began the Klingon War in 2262.

The Romulans were quick to enter the conflict on the side of the rebels.

On Stardate: 22620414 (April 14, 2262), the Federation becomes drawn into the conflict when the U.S.S. Excalibur responded to a distress call sent by a Klingon colony located on Mor’vaq III and successfully fought off rebel Klingon forces.

Following what it considered an honorable act, the Klingon High Council formally requested Federation assistance in fighting the war, which the Federation Council accepted.

A ceasefire stopped the fighting at 0000 hours on Stardate: 22450517 (May 17, 2265), following the signing of an armistice by Klingon Empire, the Federation, the Romulan Star Empire and the newly created Klingon Imperium.

The Foundations storyline begins with the ceasefire and tracks events from that point forward.

We face an uncertain future on a frontier filled with Romulans that have no thoughts of going into seclusion as they did in the other time, plus some Klingons that might consider us something akin to friends while others see us as the darkest of enemies.
